The Council Advancing Work-Based Learning (CAWBL) is an independent, nonpartisan organization dedicated to promoting work-based learning (WBL) policies, perceptions, and practices. It spearheads a global movement to openly recognize learning, regardless of where or how it occurs. As the global standards and accreditation body, CAWBL recognizes programs, employers, skills labs, centers of excellence, and professional occupations that share a commitment to open learning and recognition.

This Training Item introduces the writing process as a structured method for developing clear, effective, and ethical business communications. Earners build fluency in planning, drafting, editing, and formatting a range of documents for internal and external audiences.

Criteria

Earners will be able to independently:

  1. ti1.L1 – Understand the essential components of effective business communication
  2. ti1.L2 – Demonstrate the ability to structure written communications for various business contexts
  3. ti1.L3 – Apply techniques for drafting, editing, and formatting business reports or emails

Knowledge, Skills, and Behaviours (KSBs)

Knowledge

  • K92 – Communication techniques and strategies
  • K95 – Corporate communication practices and writing techniques

Skills

  • S78 – Effective communication skills for internal and external stakeholders
  • S83 – Capability to craft business communications, including reports and proposals

  • B18 – Building collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders

Learning Experience, Activities

Earners participate in structured and self-directed learning experiences, including:

  • Exploring steps in the writing process (planning, drafting, editing, formatting)
  • Practicing different writing styles (formal, persuasive, informative)
  • Identifying purpose, audience, and structure in business communication
  • Receiving peer feedback and expert guidance
  • Engaging in reflective practice supported by mentoring

All activities are facilitated by a qualified C.WBLD or learning coordinator and contribute to formative progression within PathLedger.


Assessment Process

This ti requires two pieces of evidence to be marked complete:

  1. STARR Reflection – A structured, self-authored reflection on a real communication experience
  2. Expert or Client Witness Statement – An observation or validation from a supervisor, client, or senior colleague
  3. C.WBLD Sign-Off – The only authorized assessor for formative validation at the ti level

These requirements align with ISO/IEC 17024 standards for impartial, evidence-based certification of persons.


Your RPL Submission Must Include:

1. STARR Reflection Statement A structured, first-person account that addresses all Learning Outcomes (LIs) and related Knowledge, Skills, and Behaviours (KSBs) through a real experience.

2. Expert or Client Witness Statement An endorsement from someone who directly observed or received the written product. Please provide:

3. Submission Evaluation Once your STARR reflection is sent to your expert or client witness, a CAWBL staff member will review the file for completion and record your evidence for PathLedger, and you will receive your badge.
