What are some other ways we can increase students’ awareness of academic integrity and help them avoid academic integrity violations? *

To help students better understand and uphold academic integrity, instructors can take a proactive, supportive approach that integrates awareness into classroom teaching. Embedding academic integrity modules or micro-credentials into courses—especially with discipline-specific examples—can clarify expectations early. I do this in my RSC775 class to get the ready for completing their capstone project in RSC890. Additionally, using real-life scenarios and anonymized case studies helps students recognize the consequences of misconduct and encourages ethical decision-making. I also find that providing practical tools like citation clinics, assignment checklists, and access to plagiarism checkers empowers students to work honestly and confidently. I typically post the Library's calendar of citation workshops on my announcement page of my courses to encourage students to take advantage of resources and ensure the accuracy of their work. Finally, as faculty we can support students by clearly outlining expectations in assignment instructions and rubrics, offering draft feedback, and fostering open conversations about integrity as a shared value. As AI tools become more common, it’s also essential to provide clear, course-specific guidelines on acceptable use, along with opportunities for students to practice ethical AI use.
