I learned about Badge Canvas and how it was used for the Green Skills symposium in Nairobi. Don talked about the session and how they used it to strengthen certification pathways for decent jobs in the informal economy. He set the stage explaining why people seek recognition and situating it within the context of education, work and personal life. I learned about how recognition is connected to identity and is a way for humans to connect. I learned about Miller's pyramid for assessing competence. I learned about who can recognize and the ways in which they can do this. I knew most of these but some were new. We got to practice with a real-world example of EA professional development sessions that could issue badges for recognition of learning.

How I can use what I learned in my professional practice:

I am still working towards pitching a recognition system in my school division. I introduced CanCreds very broadly, to the student outcomes subcommittee at the board meeting yesterday as a way they might consider recognizing the learning that EAs are asked to participate in. They wanted to learn more. I learned about the types of badges that can be developed and I'd categorize this as a Workplace recognition and upskilling challenge or maybe a combination of this and one other. I think this will help morale and rapport.
