Design a Greenhouse
To apply your understanding of greenhouse fundamentals by designing a greenhouse, selecting appropriate materials and systems, and justifying your choices based on the information covered in Module 1.
Participate in 24 in-class hours of greenhouse activities
Plant from seed or slip, various plant species, observing their stages of growth and care requirements needed including light, temperature and fertigation. Ensure hands on experience with various growing mediums, soil mixing, seed placement/product labelling, identifying various types of related equipment, and choice of specific plant species for greenhouse zone. Practice plant care through various stages of growth including irrigation, pest management options, crop management, safe food handling practices and waste management.
Develop a Business Plan
Develop a condensed business plan for a greenhouse operation, including its purpose, target market, financial forecast, and sustainability practices. This will allow you to apply research and business strategy to a real-world agricultural venture.
Participate in employer tours, hands on learning
Attend tours and learn first-hand about greenhouse construction (controlled chambers), commercial greenhouse operations, and greenhouse/horticulture program at Assiniboine Park Conservancy.
