Introducing a sector-leading, virtual offering from the Ontario CLRI at Baycrest: a free, evidence-based certificate for all LTC team members in Ontario who plan, coordinate, and/or deliver education in long-term care, and created in consultation with educators in long-term care! The Specialized Educator Certificate in LTC (SECL) supports team members in upgrading their knowledge and skills through experiential learning, peer collaboration, and relational education approaches that strengthen connections with team members It is the only specialized educator program specific to LTC.

The Ontario Centres for Learning, Research and Innovation in Long-Term Care (Ontario CLRI) enhance quality of care and living for residents across the province. Our Learning Division develops, delivers and evaluates educational resources and programs to train the current and future long-term care (LTC) workforce.

Learning Outcomes

Earners of this certificate are able to:

  • Recognize leading education and relational practices that are useful in Long Term Care
  • Describe how to use the SECL Six Step Educator Competency Framework to enhance training and education in your LTC home
  • Explore creative ways of teaching and learning
  • Identify Ontario CLRI resources that can complement your approach to training and education
  • Apply relational, collaborative, and experiential approaches to support team learning

Course Content

  • Week 1: Mandatory program orientation
  • Week 2: Analyze: Understanding what influences the uptake of education in practice
  • Week 3: Co-Develop: Having conversations about ways of making an education program more reflective of needs, wishes, and settings
  • Week 4: Adapt: Adapting education so that is valuable, useful, and appropriate overview of educator competencies: Facilitate, Coach, and Evaluate
  • Week 5: Facilitate: Creating the learning environment, engaging learners, fostering learning, and assessing learning in the moment
  • Week 6: Coach: Supporting team members in transferring learning into practice
  • Week 7: Evaluate: Assessing learning and using the results to plan future education
  • Week 8: Putting it all together: Noticing progress in your educator practice

Learning Experience & Activities

Successful completion of the certificate includes:

  • Participation in a mandatory orientation session
  • Participation in at least 6 of 7 synchronous sessions
  • Completion of all levels of Hypatia’s Guild(a serious educational game)

  • This is a Completion-Based Certificate
