Certificate in Breast Imaging - Screening (CBIS)

The Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT) is Canada’s certifying body and professional association for medical radiation technologists and therapists (MRTs). CAMRT represents four disciplines: radiological technology, nuclear medicine, magnetic resonance and radiation therapy.

L'ACTRM représente quatre disciplines : la technologie de radiologie, la médecine nucléaire, la résonance magnétique et la radiothérapie.

CBIS Criteria

The CAMRT Breast Imaging Certificate program for screening mammography is available to:

• Medical radiation technologists who have been certified by CAMRT in the practice of radiological technology
• Internationally educated medical radiation technologists (IEMRTs) in the specialty of radiological technology who are graduates of medical radiation technology programs substantially like Canadian accredited programs

The CBIS program has both didactic and clinical components.

Didactic Learning

1. Successful completion of CAMRT’s Mammography*/Breast Imaging 1 course, with a minimum exam mark of 75%.
2. Successful completion of CAMRT’s Mammography*/Breast Imaging 2 course, with a minimum exam mark of 75%.
3. Completion of CAMRT’s Breast Cancer: An Overview Quick Self Study** with a minimum mark of 75% on the post quiz.
4. Successful completion of a competency-based exam based on current practice.

*These courses are no longer available.

**The Quick Self Study was added to the CBIS Didactic Learning Requirements in 2019.

Clinical Experience

1. Completion of a Summary of Clinical Competence (SCC) and experience verification, including the completion of a minimum of 750 cases under the supervision of a Clinical Advisor. The SCC is a list of procedures and associated competencies that must be assessed by a Clinical Advisor.

After review of both components – didactic and clinical - by the CBI Committee, the Certificate in Breast Imaging (Screening) is granted to the technologist. The designation granted is CBIS.
