SECL Level 2 builds on the foundation of SECL Level 1 to help long-term care educators strengthen their relational education practice through interactive, synchronous virtual workshops focused on key educator competencies. Participants will apply appreciative, experiential, and collaborative approaches using practical tools from the Ontario CLRI. The Specialized Educator Certificate in LTC (SECL) supports team members who plan, coordinate, and/or deliver education in upgrading their knowledge and skills through experiential learning and peer collaboration. It is the only specialized educator program specific to LTC. This course is available to participants who have completed SECL Level 1.

The Ontario Centres for Learning, Research and Innovation in Long-Term Care (Ontario CLRI) enhance quality of care and living for residents across the province. Our Learning Division develops, delivers and evaluates educational resources and programs to train the current and future long-term care (LTC) workforce.

Learning Objectives

Recipients of this certificate are able to:

  • Describe how the three relational educator approaches (collaborative, appreciative, and experiential) impact the Six-Step Educator Competency Framework.
  • Identify how and when to use the relational educator Ontario CLRI tools in your educator practice in LTC.
  • Apply the relational educator Ontario CLRI tools in your educator practice in LTC.
  • Choose opportunities to use the relational educator Ontario CLRI tools in your educator practice in LTC.

Course Content

  • Week 1: Orientation
  • Week 2: Workshop #1 The Collaborative Approach
  • Week 3: Workshop #2 The Appreciative Approach
  • Week 4: Workshop #3 The Experiential Approach

Learning Experience & Activities

This is a facilitated learning program that includes:

  • Virtual synchronous group-based training sessions.
  • Each workshop features hands-on simulation-based activities featuring an Ontario CLRI at Baycrest Relational Educator Tool.
  • In session reflective practice opportunities.

Assessment

This is a Completion-Based Certificate

  1. Attend all workshops (including orientation)
  2. Submit a final written reflection at the end of the program
  3. Complete SECL Level 2 Wrap-Up Survey

Estimated Learning Effort

The overall program length is 5 hours synchronous virtual learning and 2 hours of asynchronous self-directed work split up into:
