This will include such topics as interpersonal communications, gerontological care and the support for the physical care, emotional care and daily activities of persons in personal care homes. The hands-on skills required will be further developed through a simulated laboratory setting. \n\n**Total Instructional Time: **\n\n29 hours theory including 6 10-minute theory assessments \n16 hours hands-on lab \n45 hours total (including hands-on lab) \n\n\n**Knowledge and Skills Demonstrated: **\n\nThis badge certifies that the learner can demonstrate the following knowledge and skills: \n\n- Demonstrate an understanding of the role of both the Uncertified Health Care Aide (U-HCA) and Health Care Aide (HCA) within the health care environment. \n- Demonstrate a caring approach to promote the physical and social well-being of the client.  \n- Assist clients to maintain independence within their capabilities. \n- Communicate effectively with clients and other health team members. \n- Perform care-giving skills safely, competently, and in an organized manner in a PCH. \n- Relate own beliefs, values, and choices as they impact the U-HCA role and responsibilities including self-care. \n- Perform the U-HCA role in a safe, responsible, and accountable manner. \n \n**Evidence/Criteria for Success**: \n\nThe badge earner has met the following criteria for success: \n\n- Has achieved a score of 70% or higher on 6 theory assessments. \n- Has demonstrated care-giving skills including assisting with bedmaking, meals, and client hygiene. \n- Has demonstrated routine practices regarding donning and doffing of PPE, correct hand hygiene procedures, and isolation procedures.  \n- Has demonstrated assisting with moving, positioning, and transferring a client (including assisting with a mechanical lift).
